Let's say you go a little crazy and decide to try to get a big-ass comic done as fast as is humanly possible. Or youmanly possible, really. Two things you want to avoid:

1) the above HAND-stipling page that wasn't even a part of your layouts or schedule, idiot

and

2) mistake your mug of india ink for your mug of coffee when going for that big, single, mug-emptying gulp.

Do the second one only if you want to somehow empathise more closely with Tom Neeley's characters.

MR. EYBYANINCH 16

NO color. Today, I'm thinking no color for Mr. Eybyaninch. Of course, then I look at a panel like this one, and I think color might help it some. Maybe if I just go back in and spot some blacks it will be fine. Drop some shadows.

I also printed and assemble a dummy of the big, silly cheese fight comic that turns into abstract art comedy. It's called Earth Minds Are Weak #10: THE SAUCE OF CONTENTION! And it is a deluxe 7x8.5" edition, printed on faux parchment paper and bound in a Jupiter red pearlescent cardstock cover. And It will have stickers affixed, but I need to get me an X-Acto for that. It's both a commentary on the Omnibus-Masterwork-Archive-ing of silly action comics, and something that makes me laugh. Mostly the latter. Ask for it by name or vague description!

MR. EYBYANINCH 15

Breakin' out the Ames Guide! Ames lettering takes about 100 times longer than the freestyle I used on the other pages, but I think it's fitting. It gives it a more instructional look while still looking hand-drawn. Also, I had a lot of information to convey, so I needed something for the tight delights. How does Dan Zettwoch do it with the diagrams? I ask, 'cause that was rough, and I didn't even have to figure out how the mechanics actually work, or make a readable diagram.

Anyway, that was a slow page. But I think it will hold a place of honor in my Crazytown, butterfly.

THIS MAKES ME WANT TO DO MORE WORK TONIGHT

Great evolution post by David Heatley who has a gorgeous looking book coming out in the fall. Should be awesome.

NO MORE ACTION FOR SERIOUS

Yesterday, I thought the Action Sauce Cheese Book was done. Today, I realised it wasn't. Tonight, I think it finally is.

Edit: Holy fuck. It's almost 11? Shit.

MR. EYBYANINCH 14

Ok. #12 brush, Hunt 102 and Hunt 107. All business. I kinda wish every drawing looked like this. It makes a good argument for doing so much work at once, let me tell you.

ME AT WRESTLEMANIA

Best quote from my dream last night:

"I like the blind wrestler gimmick, but it has some obvious limitations. Having me play both sides in an action figure match at Wrestlemania is the least of them."

MoCCA 08

Can we push MoCCA back a few weeks or so? I've got cylanders I didn't even know I had firing on new horsepowers. Seriously. Move it to the begining of July and I'll have five new books ready to go.

NEARLY FINAL ACTION

Pages 16 are that last gag I wanted to include. I crack up just thinking about it.

The back cover has another little gag, because I can't leave well enough alone.

The cover without logos or title, which I'm just finishing now:

ACTION 1

SAUCE!

Pages 2 and 15

That makes 7! And I'm floor tiles away from getting the 8th page (page 1) done. I probably won't scan it until tomorrow though.

I'm not quite as ahead of schedule as that might sound though, as I've thought of this new gag I'd like to get in there. Pages 16 & 17 to go. At least.

Then front, back and inside front covers to figure out. One will probably be a text piece.

MY APOLOGIES TO IRON FIST

You don't have the worst super hero name anymore.

Now I need to get back to Mr. Eybyaninch!

SAUCE OF CONTENTION!

Pages 3, 13 and 14; respectively.

MR. EYBYANINCH 11

Two down, 5 to go. I have two pieces of the Action scanned, one drying and two about halfway done. Business!

ACTION 04 and GOoaAL!

Page four. Three more and I'll be at the start. Then a cover. Possibly 2 pages at the end for an end to violence proper. We'll see.

The Goal:

Two Pages a day average. I may be posting less frequently. We'll see. Either way: two pages a day on average to get serious DONES for MoCCA. Blow it out.

START OF THE ACTION PAGE 5

Closing in on the start.

MR. EYBYANINCH 09

Yesterday only got worse and worse. So, I got drunk instead of finishing this page. Today was a sad day, but all the shock is wearing away. And it seemed important to get back to work.

I'll have another Action page done tonight as well, but I won't get it scanned in until tomorrow.

GET BETTER, RORY!

Joe Field reports that one of the world's best comics retailers has fallen into a coma. I've only talked to Rory a tiny bit online, and I haven't been to Comic Relief in Berkeley since they changed locations a few years ago, but he's a great guy and his store was the absolute coolest place I've ever been.

Somehow, after building up a ridiculous head of steam and making comics like crazy all weekend, this feels like a kick in the head. Damn, I still haven't seen what he thought of last week's Lost! That doesn't really make much sense, but... you know what I mean.

Get better, Rory.

SCORING BIG DEEP IN THE TRASH

I went to get a little energy snack over at the corner store to get me through the rest of the night's work, when I stumbeld on an honest-to-goodness trove!

Nothing says, "Perfect for Justin" quite like unfinished wood, and nothing says, "nearly perfect for mangas" quite like a pedestal-topped cd rack:

It's taller than me! I'll keep it near the bed, since it looks like a ladder to heaven, and I've been told my bed is about as far from that as people can get.

So, the rack has the perfect depth — for manga holding — but it's a bit on the thin side. Oh well. I can still fit up to 16 volumes of Hikaro No Go on each of its 12 shelves, for a total of 192 volumes of Hikaro No Go:

—SPOILER ALERT!—

In volume 192, Shindo comesthisclose to beating arch rival Akira Toya for the Meijin trophy. But he won't give up hope and promises that he'll finally defeat his friend, and be named the greatest Go player who ever lived, when next they meet. In Volume 407. In that same volume, Shindo finally realizes that Sai is not a man. I CAN HARDLY WAIT!

Here are the Hikarus peeking out, taunting me with the new rack's inadequacies:

I also got this crazy-ass table:

No, it's not crazy-ass because it's on it's side with it's legs off, it's crazy-ass because it is obsessed with Kelly Lynch's Boxing Helena. No. That's not it. It's crazy-ass because it's some sort of Transformer table. The top flips open and slides over to become a table twice its own width. It's a 36" square table that becomes a 36" x 6' table. That's an 18" overhang on two sides. Is that a recipe for disaster or a personal ad?

Thank you! I'll be here all night! Tip Waders!

MR. EYBYANINCH 08

Page 8! This prints a lot greener than it looks on screen. I may have to bump the yellow higher for super sicks.

This was hand-colored, using a technique I think I remember reading Seth uses for his comics. I painted the to-be-color areas with pro-white paint on a clear vellum overlay. It's kind of a cool way to work, because the vellum isn't completely clear and it wrinkles as the ink dries. So, you become less and less sure of what you're doing as you go along.

Then I scanned both pages, did my tweaks, and turned the white areas of the overlay into that green. Then I combined them in photoshop and tried to figure out where they synced up.
